A Story: Why Jesus Wouldn’t Play the Animal Game Today

In Blog, Family, Practical Help, Resources by Shannon @Today's Lady Virtue

One of our family traditions is Saturday morning breakfast, where we sit and eat together, lingering longer than usual to talk, laugh, & share. Sometimes we play a game (like 20 q’s to guess what animal someone is thinking of ). ‍‍‍‍‍

This week my kids and I read through Jesus’ intimate conversation with His closest followers during their Last Supper together. I explained to my children that this meal would be the equivalent of the last Saturday morning breakfast we would ever share with Daddy.

“It’s our LAST time to sit and eat with Him. He is about to die.”

They stopped fidgeting. Their eyes grew wide. I could see they were listening.

I asked them questions like this:

“If this was our last time with Daddy, do you think we would play the animal game?

Or do you think he would tell you the most important things that he would want you to know before he dies?”

Even children agreed that Daddy wouldn’t play the animal game in this situation.

Likewise, the time had come for Jesus to die. Soon He would return to the Father in Heaven. But first, His betrayal was coming with a kiss. His arrest, trials, Peter’s denials, sentencingmocking, crucifixion, and death were imminent. Jesus’ time to die drew near. He didn’t play the animal game at this meal. He shared the most important lessons His friends and followers needed to hear.

Relating this back to Jesus, I explained, instead of just hanging out and playing games with His closest friends, Jesus told them the most important lessons, warnings, and  reminders that they would need to hold on to after He died. He ‍ counseled, comforted, and assured them. He reminded them of God’s promises.

With this preface, we took turns reading Jesus’ last words to His inner circle of friends in John chapters 13-17 in the Holy Bible. Did you know Jesus prayed for you before He died?

If you haven’t read this already, even if you have!, I encourage you to let yourself sit around the table with Jesus and His friends, listening to His heart for y-o-u.

If you push the audio button in this link, you can close your eyes and imagine you’re IN this scene while you listen to Jesus’ last words to His friends being read aloud, washing over you.
